Yes. The flip key on the 2010 EOS has a hinge pin that wears over time, and the plastic housing around it can crack under the stress of daily use. When the blade detaches or snaps inside the cylinder, the fix is extraction first, then a proper shell replacement.

The way these fobs are built, the transponder chip and the remote board are both housed inside the fob body. As long as both come out intact, they transfer into a fresh shell with a newly cut blade and the car behaves exactly as before. No reprogramming needed if the original electronics survive the transfer undamaged.

One mistake people make is trying adhesives on a cracked shell. It holds for a few days and then fails again, usually at the worst time. A correct shell swap done once is the right call.

What exactly is a remote flip key, and what does it do on the 2010 EOS?

If a fresh battery does not fix it and the car cranks but will not fire, the transponder chip is worth looking at. A cracked chip, a bad solder joint inside the fob, or a chip that has lost its pairing to the vehicle can all produce a crank-no-start with a key warning showing.

If the car does not crank at all, that is a different path entirely and usually points somewhere other than the key.

Whatever the dash is showing, do not let it sit. Running repeated failed start attempts while the car is trying to flag an immobilizer issue is not doing the cylinder any favors.

I bought a replacement fob online for my 2010 EOS. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2010 EOS does not have an onboard self-programming sequence for adding or replacing keys the way some older domestic vehicles do. They are in the same fob but they are separate functions. The transponder chip that authorizes the start and the remote electronics that handle lock and unlock operate independently. So yes, one side can fail while the other keeps working.

When the remote side goes out but the car still starts, the usual suspects are a dead or dying CR2032, corroded battery contacts inside the shell, or a cracked circuit board. Open the fob and look at the battery contacts first. If they show any green or white residue, clean them carefully. If the board itself has a visible crack near the hinge, that is your answer. The mechanical stress from a loose hinge eventually translates into board damage.

If cleaning the contacts and seating a fresh CR2032 does not bring the buttons back, a shell and board inspection on the bench will tell you whether it is a repair or a replacement.
