2004 Chevrolet S-10
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What kind of key does the 2004 Chevrolet S-10 use?

A straight mechanical key, nothing else. No remote, no fob, no battery to swap. The ignition reads the physical cut of the blade, and that's the whole security picture. There are no buttons because there is no remote entry system built into the key itself. If you've seen listings online for fobs or "chip keys" for this truck, those are for different vehicles or different years. The 2004 S-10 key is simply metal, cut to your truck.

Q: Why does the dealer seem to make key replacement more complicated than it sounds?

For a lot of vehicles that's a fair complaint, but on the 2004 S-10 it really shouldn't be complicated at all. This key has no programming cycle, no security relearn, no wait timers. The delay at a dealer usually comes from shop scheduling, parts availability on an older blank, and flat-rate labor billing that doesn't always match actual time spent. I skip all of that. I come to you, decode or match the cut, and hand you a working key.

Q: I have the original key but it's worn down and starting to slip. Can I get a copy before it fails completely?

Best move you can make. A worn key is readable by most machines, but the further it degrades the harder it is to copy accurately. If it's gotten to the point where you have to jiggle it or hold it at an angle to get the ignition to catch, copying that cut may produce something that works most of the time but not all of the time.

Q: Can I get a key made for my 2004 S-10 without having any key at all?

Yes. All-keys-lost on a mechanical key vehicle like this is not a big deal. I can decode the lock cylinder directly, or in some cases pull the key code through other means, and cut a key that way. No donor key needed. It takes a little longer than a straight copy, but the result is the same: a working key cut to your truck.

2004 Chevrolet S-10 Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from someone parked near the Lomas Santa Fe shopping strip in Solana Beach. She'd lost the only key to her 2004 S-10 and figured it was going to be a whole ordeal. She'd called the dealer first, heard something about "ordering parts" and "scheduling an appointment," and by the time she reached me she sounded like she'd already written off the afternoon.

I drove over and took a look. No fob, no chip, just a metal key and a lock cylinder that had been turning keys since Bush's first term. I decoded the lock and cut her a replacement right there in the lot. That was the whole job.

She stood there for a second after I handed it to her, like she was waiting for a catch. There wasn't one. The truck started, she drove it, done. She mentioned the dealer quote almost as an afterthought. I told her it was a fraction of that. She laughed and said she wished she'd called me first.

Chevrolet S-10 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does a Chevrolet dealer take for a key replacement on a 2004 S-10?▼

Longer than the job deserves. For a mechanical key like this one, the actual cutting takes minutes. But dealers often bundle it with a service write-up, a wait in the queue, and sometimes a parts order if they don't keep blanks on hand for a truck this age. Owners have reported waiting days just to get scheduled, even for something this simple. I come to your vehicle and handle it the same day, usually within the hour.
