A guy near the Naval Base Area called me about his 1996 Viper. Not a daily driver situation, more of a weekend car he keeps in good shape. His remote had gotten flaky over the past few months, shorter and shorter range, then nothing at all. He figured the fob was dead and wanted a replacement sorted before he actually needed it.
When I got to his driveway I asked if he had tried a fresh battery first. He had, but he pulled out the old one and I noticed right away it was a CR2025, not the CR2016 the fob calls for. A little thicker, enough to bow the shell slightly so the contact was inconsistent. Classic swap-the-wrong-cell situation.
We put the correct CR2016 in, closed the shell flush, and the range came right back. He did not need a whole new fob.
I still walked him through what a full replacement would involve if he ever got to that point, because he wanted to know. On a mid-90s Dodge like this, the remote function is separate from the ignition key, so replacing the fob is a programming job, not a chip or immobilizer job. Good system to understand on a car you want to keep running for a long time.
He got back to his Saturday with the Viper doing exactly what it was supposed to do. No dealer trip, no tow, no waiting room.
