A guy in Scripps Ranch called me about his 2004 Viper. The remote had been acting up for weeks, and then the car started being finicky about starting. Not a no-start, just hesitation, like it was thinking about it. He figured it was a fuel or ignition issue. He'd already priced a dealer visit.
I drove out and we talked through it in his driveway. The fob was original, which means it was twenty years old at that point. The battery tested low even though he'd only swapped it a few months back. That's a storage issue, not a fob issue. I put in a fresh battery from a sealed pack, cleaned both contact clips inside the fob, and cycled through all four buttons. Range came back. Then I checked the fob's signal quality and verified the immobilizer was reading the key correctly, because on these early-2000s systems the transponder side and the remote side are separate concerns and one can fail while the other is fine.
The start hesitation turned out to be unrelated to the key entirely, but at least he knew that now instead of paying a dealer to tell him the same thing after a three-day wait.
He'd been quoted a number that made him wince. He paid a fraction of that to confirm his existing fob was fine and that the key system was doing its job.
