A guy in Del Mar Heights called me about a 1997 Dodge Viper he had just picked up at an auction. Clean car, one working fob, no spare. The auction house told him to sort out a second remote on his own. He figured it would take a day, maybe two.
He went to the dealer first. They quoted him more than he was willing to spend, and then told him the car would need to come in because they couldn't program it in the field. He didn't love that answer, especially since the car was sitting at the auction lot and he hadn't even driven it home yet.

The factory fob on the Viper this generation does its job through a rolling-code radio system tied to the vehicle's alarm and door lock setup. It's not the same loop as the ignition, so programming the remote doesn't involve the kind of immobilizer reset you'd do on a newer platform. I matched the correct blank to his fob spec, confirmed the button count, and ran the programming sequence on site. Both remotes locked and unlocked the doors cleanly. Alarm armed and disarmed. All three buttons doing exactly what they're supposed to do.
He was at the lot maybe thirty minutes. Drove home with two working fobs and didn't need a tow or a service appointment.
The dealer comparison came up, and honestly it was more of an afterthought. He was just relieved to have a spare in his hand before he hit the road.
