A transponder key has a small chip embedded in the plastic head. When you turn the key, the antenna ring around the ignition reads that chip and checks it against the codes stored in the immobilizer. If the chip responds with the right signal, the car starts. If it doesn't respond at all, or responds with the wrong code, the immobilizer blocks the starter.

A blade cut perfectly to your locks won't help if the chip isn't there or isn't programmed. The car will crank and immediately kill, or won't engage the starter at all. That's the immobilizer doing its job.

Ford brought this system to the Focus from the first model year in North America, so every 2000 Focus needs a properly chipped and programmed key to run.

Why does the dealer take so long on Ford key jobs when the actual programming doesn't take that long?

Three bottlenecks.

First, blank availability. If they don't have the right chipped blank in stock, it has to be ordered by VIN. That's not a next-day thing.

Second, scheduling. Ford dealers have been running tight on service bay availability for years. Key jobs sit in line behind everything else.

Third, the immobilizer enrollment itself has a mandatory timed wait built into the process for each key being added, and dealer workflow wraps that in paperwork, dispatch, and parts room trips.

A job that takes me under an hour in your driveway can become a multi-day event at the dealer, not because the work is harder there, but because your car is one ticket in a long queue.

I only have one working key left for my 2000 Focus. Can I still use the onboard add-a-key trick to get a spare?

No. The onboard sequence on this generation requires two already-programmed working keys to initiate. The logic is that if you can prove you own two authorized keys, the car will let you add a third without any external equipment. Drop to one key and that path is closed. You need a tech with diagnostic equipment to enroll new keys directly through the OBD port. Get that spare made before you're down to one. Losing your last key means an all-keys-lost job, which is a longer process than simply adding a spare.

The antenna ring around the ignition can also fail or shift position, breaking the read between the key and the immobilizer. Less commonly, there's a fault in the immobilizer module itself.

A key-not-detected or security warning on the dash during this would point you further in that direction, though not every failure shows a dash warning.
