2002 Ford Focus
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long does the programming actually take once you're at my car?

On a 2002 Focus, the immobilizer system has a built-in security delay that runs before it accepts a new key. That wait is part of the process and can't be skipped. After that, the actual registration is quick. If you have two working programmed keys already, there's an onboard sequence that can add a spare without external tools.

Q: Can you get me a working key faster than the dealer?

Yes, by a lot. The actual work on a 2002 Focus takes under an hour. The dealer adds scheduling, parts ordering, and shop queue time on top of that, which regularly stretches a one-hour job into a one-day or multi-day ordeal. I come to you in Spring Valley, same day, and I carry blanks for these vehicles.

Q: My 2002 Focus cranks but won't stay running. Could it be a key problem?

That specific symptom, cranks and fires then immediately dies, is one of the more recognizable signs of a transponder issue. The immobilizer reads the chip in your key at startup. If it doesn't get a valid signal, it allows a brief start then cuts the engine off as a security response. A few things can cause this even with the correct key.

Q: I bought a replacement key blank online for my 2002 Focus. Can I just get it cut and use it?

Cutting it is the easy part. But a freshly cut key with an unprogrammed chip will do exactly what the wrong key does: crank and die. The transponder has to be registered to your specific vehicle before the immobilizer will accept it. So yes, I can cut the blade to your vehicle, but the programming step is not optional on this car.

2002 Ford Focus Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a woman parked in the lot off a side street near Casa de Oro. She'd broken off her only key in the ignition cylinder of her 2002 Ford Focus. Not bent, not worn. Snapped clean, with the tip still seated inside the lock.

She was calm about it. Calmer than I expected. She said she'd already called a dealer and they wanted the car towed in, and they weren't sure when they could look at it.

I drove out to Spring Valley and pulled up next to her in the lot. Extracted the broken tip from the cylinder first, which takes patience more than anything else. Then I cut a fresh replacement key to the vehicle and programmed the transponder chip to the immobilizer right there in the parking lot. Took about 40 minutes start to finish.

She turned the key, the engine ran, and she didn't stall in the lot or anywhere after. She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a tow plus however long they needed. She saved a good chunk going the mobile route and didn't lose her day.

Ford Focus Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a Ford Focus key after hours or on the weekend?▼

Call me. Dealer service departments keep limited hours, and a 2002 Focus key isn't something they're going to rush for on a Saturday morning. If you lose your only key on a Friday evening, you're likely waiting until Monday at the earliest, and that's assuming the parts are in stock. I work nights and weekends out of Spring Valley because that's exactly when people find themselves stranded. Most key emergencies don't happen during business hours.
