A Cardiff-by-the-Sea resident called me on a Tuesday morning after the one fob he had for his 2016 Focus stopped being recognized overnight. No warning, no gradual weirdness. He went out to leave for work and the car just sat there showing a key-not-detected warning every time he pressed the start button.

When I pulled up, I had him hold the fob directly against the start button and try it. Nothing. That rules out a simple range issue. I popped the fob open and the CR2032 looked fine visually, but I swapped it anyway with a fresh one from my kit. Still nothing. That told me the fob itself had failed, not just the battery. On a 2016 Focus with only one key, that means an all-keys-lost procedure.
I connected my programming tool to the OBD port and ran the AKL sequence for the Ford smart key system. It clears the old fob data out of the vehicle's security and body control modules, then registers the new fob from scratch. There's a timed portion built into the procedure where you just wait. I cut the emergency blade to his car while that countdown ran.
Once the programming confirmed, I walked everything: start button, door lock, door unlock, trunk release, all five buttons. Then I had him try it himself from across the driveway to confirm range was solid.
He made it to work that morning. A little late, but he made it. The dealer would have had the car sitting in a queue until Friday.
