2007 Ford Focus Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
It was a Friday night near the Naval Base Area in Coronado. A couple came out after a movie and the Focus would not cooperate. The fob had stopped responding completely, and neither of them knew that the key blade built into that same remote head key would still turn the ignition. They figured the car was dead and they were stranded.
They called me mostly just to ask if anything could be done that late. I told them to pull the blade out of the fob and try the ignition. Engine started right up. They were surprised.
By then I was already 15 minutes out, so I drove over anyway because a fob that reads dead is not always just a battery. On this generation Focus, a blank remote head key needs to be programmed to the immobilizer before it will start the car, and the remote functions need a separate sync. Two distinct steps, and skipping either one means you have a partial solution.
I checked the original fob first. Housing was cracked along the seam, the CR2032 had dropped to almost nothing, and the blade had a little wobble. Swapped in a fresh battery, reseated the internal board, and ran the programming sequence. Remote range came right back and the immobilizer recognized it clean on the first attempt.
The fix was simple. But simple only looks that way when you already know what to check and you have the right equipment in the van at 10pm on a Friday.
