2009 GMC Acadia
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is a transponder key and what does it do on a 2009 GMC Acadia?

The key blade cuts match your ignition cylinder, same as any other key. But inside the plastic head there is a small transponder chip. When you insert the key and turn it, the immobilizer antenna ring around the ignition column powers that chip and reads its code. If the code matches what the system has stored, it releases the engine to start.

Q: How does what you charge compare to the GMC dealer?

Dealers charge for the part plus programming labor, and if you have no working key at all, some will require the vehicle to be towed in. That tow alone can cost more than the key work itself. We come to you, in Otay Mesa or Nestor or wherever the vehicle is sitting. Call for current pricing. It is a fraction of the dealer route, and you are not losing your weekend waiting for a Monday appointment.

Q: My 2009 Acadia starts and then stalls right away. Could this be a key or immobilizer problem?

Yes, and it is one of the more common symptoms owners on GM forums describe when the transponder is not being read correctly. The engine briefly catches because the mechanical side of the ignition is fine, then the immobilizer cuts it because it never got a clean read from the chip. A few things cause this. A cracked key head can shift the chip away from where the antenna ring can read it.

Q: I only ever had one key for my Acadia. Is all-keys-lost really doable without towing it to a dealer?

Completely doable on site. The 2009 Acadia immobilizer relearn runs through the OBD port, so as long as the vehicle is accessible, I can run the full all-keys-lost sequence right where it sits. No tow needed. The procedure clears out any previously registered keys and enrolls the new one as the primary. Takes about 45 minutes from first contact to a running vehicle, including picking the door if needed and cutting the key blade.

2009 GMC Acadia Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Nestor, close to the water, I got a call on a Saturday morning from a guy who had been fishing near the boat launch off Otay Mesa. Lost his only key somewhere between the dock and the gravel lot. Checked his pockets twice, checked the boat, walked the path back. Nothing.

His 2009 GMC Acadia was just sitting there. He had already looked up tow rates to a dealer and was resigning himself to losing the whole weekend plus Monday morning. He called me because he figured it was worth asking.

I drove out to him. The first order of business was getting into the vehicle without a key. I picked the door and decoded the wafer positions right there so I had the exact cut depths before I touched a blank. That part matters because if you cut it wrong and then program it, you have a working transponder in a key that grinds the ignition. One step at a time.

Once I had the door open, I connected to the OBD port and ran the all-keys-lost procedure for the GM immobilizer system. That sequence clears every previously learned key out of the system and starts fresh, which is exactly what you need when there are zero working keys to reference. The relearn window counted down, the new key went in, the security light cleared, and the engine turned over.

He asked me to cut a spare on the spot. Smart call. Two keys leave that parking lot instead of one.

The dealer option would have meant a tow, a Monday appointment, and a wait. He was driving home before noon.

GMC Acadia Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Why does GMC key replacement cost so much in general?▼

A lot of it is the technology layered into what looks like a simple key. The 2009 Acadia uses a transponder key, meaning there is a chip inside the head that has to be recognized by the immobilizer before the engine will start. A correctly cut key with no programming is just a door key. The vehicle will crank and die, or not start at all, and the security indicator will tell you something is wrong.
