2015 GMC Acadia Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out near the Brown Field Area in Otay Mesa, an HVAC technician had been fighting his 2015 GMC Acadia ignition for a few weeks. Not a dead key, not a dead battery. The key would go in, he'd turn it, and it would catch partway, like something inside was dragging. He'd jiggle it, push slightly sideways, sometimes pull it back out and try again. Occasionally it would catch and start. Mostly it made him late.

He called a dealer. They quoted him a new ignition cylinder, a new key, and reprogramming time, and told him to bring it in and plan on leaving it overnight. He was one phone call away from doing exactly that when a coworker told him to try a locksmith first.

I looked at the ignition and it was a mechanical wear problem inside the cylinder, not a failed unit. The wafers that the key blade rides against had worn down unevenly. That is what causes the catch-and-drag feel. The cylinder itself was fine. I decoded the existing lock, replaced the worn internal components, and cut a fresh key matched to the repaired cylinder. Then I used my programming equipment to enroll the transponder chip through the OBD port so the immobilizer recognized the new key.

He watched the whole thing from the tailgate of a coworker's truck. When I handed him the new key and he turned the ignition clean and smooth on the first try, he sat there for a second like he was waiting for it to catch again. It did not.

Saved him a trip, saved him the wait, and saved him a good chunk compared to what the dealer had quoted. Nothing was replaced that did not actually need replacing.
