I was parked near the commercial strip off Siempre Viva in Otay Mesa West when the call came in. Guy said his 2021 Acadia was showing a key-not-detected warning on the cluster and the push-button start had stopped responding. He was standing in a warehouse lot with a dead fob and a meeting in an hour.
First thing I asked was whether he had tried the backup. He didn't know there was one. I walked him through it over the phone: pull the emergency insert blade out of the back of the fob, use that to get in the door, then hold the fob itself directly against the start button while pressing the brake. The car fired right up. He went to his meeting.
When he got back I was there waiting. Popped open the fob, swapped in a fresh CR2032, reseated the battery contact, and tested range and all five buttons. Everything came back. The fob just needed a battery that was actually making contact. He had replaced the battery once before but the clip was slightly sprung and the connection was intermittent, which explained why the issue came and went for a few weeks before it locked up completely.
He had already called the dealer. They quoted him a new fob, programming, and said to bring the vehicle in and plan for a day or two. We fixed what was actually broken, on site, in about twenty minutes. He kept the original fob, saved a good chunk, and made his meeting.
