Her 2016 Honda HR-V was sitting in the lot with zero working keys. The dealer told her sister a replacement would take three to five business days, the car would need to be towed to them, and they were recommending a full rekey on top of everything since the stolen fob could still physically open the doors. The 2016 HR-V takes a 4-button proximity fob, and the emergency insert key inside it still needs to be cut to the door lock. I decoded the cylinder and cut the blade on site. Both fobs were working before the police called back.
She drove home that night. The stolen fob can still slide into the door lock mechanically, but the immobilizer will not let the engine turn over. That key is a paperweight to anyone who picked it up.
The dealer route would have meant a tow, a multi-day wait, and a much heavier bill. She got two keys, programmed and tested in the parking lot, the same night it happened.
