1996 Honda Prelude Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy near the CSUSM Area called me about his 1996 Prelude. His original remote had been on a hook in the kitchen for a couple of years, and when he finally went to use it again, it did nothing. Completely dead. He figured he just needed a replacement fob and asked if I could sort it out on site.

When I got there and we talked through it, the picture got a little clearer. The Prelude from this era uses a remote-plus-blade setup, not the integrated chip key that Honda moved to later. The remote is for the door locks and that's its job. The key blade itself handles ignition. So the first thing I did was confirm whether the car was actually starting fine with the blade, which it was.

Then I looked at the fob. The battery was in there but it was the wrong thickness. Someone along the way had swapped in a cell that looked close but wasn't a CR2025. The contacts weren't making solid connection. I put a proper CR2025 in, seated it correctly, and tested all four buttons at distance.

It came back to life. He was a little quiet for a second, like he was waiting to see if it would work again. It did.

He'd been ready to go to the dealer. That route would have meant an appointment, waiting on a part, and paying dealer rates for what turned out to be a battery-fit issue. Instead, it got fixed in his driveway in about fifteen minutes.
