Out near San Pasqual Valley, a woman who sells vintage furniture at one of the Escondido flea markets flagged me down during her lunch break. She had two problems she thought were one problem.

Her remote had gone mostly dead. Buttons barely worked, range was about two feet, and the trunk release did nothing. She had already decided she needed a whole new key programmed and was ready to pay whatever that cost. A friend had told her the dealer was the only option for a 2001 Prelude because of the immobilizer. The friend was not entirely wrong about the immobilizer part, but that was not actually her issue.

I popped the fob open right there on the tailgate of a nearby truck. The CR2025 inside was so corroded it had left a faint green ring on the battery contact. The contact itself was slightly bent inward, not making a clean connection even when a fresh battery was seated. I cleaned it, bent the contact back out, and put in a new CR2025.

Walked the buttons. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic. All of them working from across the lot.

Her ignition key was fine. The transponder in it had never been the issue. The immobilizer was happy. The car started the same as it always had. The whole visit took maybe twenty minutes, most of which was me explaining the difference between the remote system and the ignition security system while she ate her lunch.

She had already cleared her afternoon thinking she would be at the dealer until three o'clock. She was back at her booth before the lunch crowd left.
