1998 Honda Prelude
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long does the job actually take once you arrive?

For the 1998 Prelude, it depends on what's needed. If it's remote work only, the on-site time is short. The fob on this generation is a keyless entry unit, separate from the ignition, so there's no immobilizer reset involved with the remote. Key cutting for a replacement blade takes a few minutes once I decode or have the cut data. All-keys-lost on the ignition side takes longer because the security system has to be addressed properly.

Q: Can you get this done faster than the dealer?

Almost always. A dealer visit for a key or remote on a car this age involves drop-off, waiting for a service writer, possibly sourcing an old part, and then shop labor billed at their posted rate. On a late-nineties Prelude, the remote is its own separate unit and the parts pipeline for original equipment isn't what it was. I come to you in Rancho Santa Fe, work on site, and you have a tested result before I leave.

Q: My Prelude starts fine but the remote stopped locking and unlocking the doors. What's going on?

On the 1998 Prelude, the remote is a keyless entry fob only. It talks to the door lock system, not the ignition. So the car starting normally when the remote stops working is exactly what you'd expect. Nine times out of ten on a fob this age, the answer is a dead or dying CR2025, a contact issue inside the case, or wear on the rubber button pads.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my '98 Prelude. Will it just work, or does it need to be programmed?

It needs to be programmed to your car. The 1998 Prelude has an onboard remote programming procedure that doesn't require dealer equipment, but it does have to be done correctly with the right sequence using the existing working remote and the new one together. If you've lost all remotes, that changes the procedure. Either way, a fob you ordered online is an unpaired unit until it's registered to your specific car.

1998 Honda Prelude Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from someone at a clinic near The Bridges in Rancho Santa Fe. She had back-to-back appointments all afternoon, her 1998 Prelude was sitting in the lot, and her remote had gone completely dead after she tried swapping the battery herself. She wasn't locked out. Car started fine. But she had no working remote and one of the buttons felt wrong when she pressed it.

I came out during her lunch window.

When I opened the fob, the issue was right there. The CR2025 she'd put in was seated just slightly off, and one of the internal contacts had gotten bent during the swap. Not a big bend. Enough to break the circuit. I reset the contact, seated a fresh battery correctly, and tested all four buttons against the car.

Then I checked the key itself, because on a car this age the blade wears and the cuts can start to feel sloppy in the cylinder. It was reading fine. No issues there.

She came out after her next patient to a fully working remote and a spare on her desk. The car never moved. A dealer would have wanted her to bring the car in, wait, and pay shop rate for a job that took me less time than her lunch break. That gap is exactly why I do this mobile.

Honda Prelude Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need help with my Prelude key after hours or on the weekend?▼

Call us. Dealers keep banker's hours, and a 1998 Prelude isn't a priority walk-in at a Honda service desk on a Saturday afternoon. We work evenings and weekends in Rancho Santa Fe and out to The Bridges. You don't wait until Monday and you don't arrange a tow just to get a remote or a key handled.
