I got a call from a guy in 4S Ranch, out near the newer residential streets off Camino del Sur. He was in his driveway, bags from a grocery run still in the trunk, and his Prelude remote had completely stopped responding. Car started fine with the blade, but the fob was dead on all four buttons.
He had already tried pressing harder. That is usually where the troubleshooting ends for most people.
I pulled up and the first thing I did was pop the fob open and check the CR2025. It measured low on my tester, barely holding voltage under load. Swapped in a fresh cell right there on the hood of my van. Nothing. Buttons still dead.
So I checked the fob contacts and the board. One of the battery clips had a small amount of corrosion on it, just enough to break the circuit under load even with a new battery in place. Cleaned it, reseated everything, and the fob came back to life on the first button press.
He asked if I needed to reprogram it. I told him the fob had never lost its pairing to the car. It just could not power up long enough to transmit. No programming needed. No dealer visit.
He had been one day away from calling the dealer and waiting however long they needed to get him in. The fix took about fifteen minutes, and he went back inside to put the groceries away.
