Out in Mt. Helix, up where the lots are steep and the driveways turn into trails, a landscape photographer parked his 2011 Infiniti M37 at a dirt pullout near one of the canyon overlooks. He hiked out for a shoot and came back to an empty pocket. The fob had gone somewhere on the trail, and it was not coming back.
He had no spare. The M37 was sitting there locked, and the nearest Infiniti dealer was over an hour away in the other direction. He called around first. Another locksmith told him the job would mean drilling the emergency lock cylinder and quoted him something painful for the privilege.
I drove out to him in La Mesa and decoded his door lock directly, reading the wafer positions without touching anything destructive. That gave me the cut depths for the emergency blade. I cut the blade, built out the new fob, and ran the all-keys-lost sequence through the OBD port to register it to the vehicle. The old fob, wherever it was on that hillside, got wiped from the system at the same time. If anyone found it, it would not start his car.
He asked me to walk him through the emergency-blade trick while I had everything apart. We spent five minutes on that. By the time I packed up, he knew more about his own key system than he had that morning.
His original cylinder was untouched. The lock works with the new key the same way it always did. He saved a good chunk compared to what the other guy was going to do, and he left with an intact car instead of a drilled one.
