Down in Downtown IB, not far from the pier, a woman called me about a 2012 M37 she had bought used through a certified pre-owned program a couple of years back. She got the car with one fob. The salesperson mentioned getting a spare at some point. She never did, because one key felt like enough.
Then the fob housing cracked along the seam. She figured she would just keep using it. Then moisture got into the electronics, and the fob started working only sometimes. Then not at all. She had the physical emergency blade in the housing, so she could still get in, but the car would not start. The immobilizer was looking for a fob it could no longer read.
When I got there she had the cracked fob in a small zip-lock bag, which I appreciated. The housing was in two pieces but the transponder chip inside was intact. I was able to read the existing data off it rather than treating it as a full all-keys-lost job. That matters because all-keys-lost on an M37 requires a longer reset cycle, and it also erases every previously enrolled key permanently. Recovering from a damaged but readable fob is a faster path when you can take it.
I built two new fobs into fresh housings, enrolled both through the diagnostic port, cut two replacement blades to her vehicle, and tested everything: start function, door locks, the request sensors on the handles, all of it.
She went from a bag of cracked plastic to two working keys in about 40 minutes. If she had gone to the dealer with a cracked fob and no working key, the conversation would have started at the service desk and probably ended a day later when the part arrived. The price would have reflected all of that. Hers did not.
One thing I tell every M37 owner: bring the broken fob, even if it looks destroyed. The chip survives more than the housing does.
