I got a call from a woman staying at a residence in Del Mar Heights. Traveling auditor, working an assignment, one key to her name. She walked out to her M56 in the evening and the door handles weren't waking up. She got in using the mechanical key insert, sat down, held the fob to the start button area like the manual says, and the car started. She figured it was the battery. Swapped in a new CR2032 at the hotel gift shop and then it got worse, not better.
By the time she called me, the fob was not being detected at all, even from inside the vehicle. The hotel front desk had given her the dealer number. Dealer told her to tow it in the next afternoon, and the wait for parts could run a few days after that. She had a morning meeting she couldn't miss.
I drove out to the lot that night with my equipment. Popped the fob open and the new battery from the gift shop was seated off-center. The contact on one side wasn't making clean contact. Reseated it, cleaned both contacts, and the fob came back to life for the lock and unlock functions. But the passive entry, where the door handles wake up as you approach, was still inconsistent.
Ran a quick scan. There was stored fault data pointing to one of the door handle antenna circuits, not the fob, not the immobilizer. The fob itself was fine. She didn't need a new key at all.
I walked her through every function before I left. All four buttons, both door handles, push-start from inside, the whole check. It was all working by the time I packed up. She made her meeting. The dealer tow-and-wait scenario never happened.
