1998 Jaguar XK
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

1998 Jaguar XK Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

There's a stretch of Eucalyptus Hills where the driveways wind back into the hills and the cars parked in them tell you a lot about the owner.

I pulled up to one on a Saturday and there sat a British racing green XK coupe, mid-morning light cutting across the hood. The owner had been driving it for years with the one key he had, and that key had finally given up.

He wasn't even sure when it stopped working, exactly. He'd put it in the ignition, the car turned over, ran for about two seconds, and died. He tried it again. Same thing. His first thought was fuel. His second thought was the battery. By the time he called me he'd already swapped the battery and was starting to wonder about the fuel pump.

I told him on the phone what it probably was before I even got there.

When I arrived I confirmed it fast. The key turned, the engine caught, and it stalled right out. Classic immobilizer behavior on a late-nineties Jaguar. The transponder chip in the key head had failed. The car was reading something, just not something it would accept.

I decoded the lock, cut a replacement key blade to match, and then handled the transponder enrollment so the immobilizer would recognize the new key. That's the part that requires the right tools and the right knowledge of how this generation's security system communicates.

Three clean starts. Key in, out, in again. No hesitation, no stall, no drama.

He asked if the dealer could have done it faster. Probably not, I told him. They'd want the car trailered in, and on a weekend that's Monday at the earliest before anyone even looks at it. He was driving before noon.
