I got a call from a guy over in Dictionary Hill, the hillside stretch of Spring Valley with the long driveways and the canyon views. He had a 2003 Jaguar XK coupe sitting in his garage that had not moved in a few weeks. He tried starting it one morning and the car just sat there. No crank. The dash lit up, but the engine would not turn over. He figured it was the battery, got a jump, and still nothing. Then he noticed the security light was staying on solid instead of flashing and going out the way it should when the car recognizes the key.
He found me through YouTube and called expecting a long explanation of what might be wrong. I told him I had seen this before on these cars and that I would rather just come out and look at it than guess over the phone.
When I got there I could tell right away the key was being read but there was a communication fault between the key and the immobilizer module. The key itself was original, showed its age, and the blade pivot had some wear on it. I ran diagnostics and confirmed the transponder was still functioning. The issue was on the vehicle side, a sync problem that needed to be cleared and the key re-enrolled.
He mentioned the car had sat through a stretch of hot weather and the battery had probably gone very low during that time. That kind of deep discharge on these older Jaguars can cause exactly this. The immobilizer module loses the plot.
I cleared the fault, re-enrolled the key, and did three cold starts to confirm it was holding. The car fired up clean every time.
He had already called a Jaguar dealer and was quoted a number that included towing, a diagnostic fee on top of the labor, and a new key just in case. He saved a good chunk by having me come to the car in his own driveway instead.
