Yes, and on a 2000 XK this comes up more than you'd think. These keys are over two decades old at this point. Shells get brittle, blades wear down, and a lot of cars in this generation have had multiple owners and multiple keys cut along the way.

If the electronics inside the old shell are still good, I can transfer them into a new housing and cut a fresh blade to your vehicle. That gets you a key that looks right and works right without a full reprogram.

If the chip inside is damaged or the remote portion has given out, that becomes a full replacement job, cut and program on site. Either way, I bring what I need to handle it in the field. You don't need to get it to a dealer or wait on parts to be ordered.

What exactly is a transponder key, and what does the 2000 XK actually use?

A transponder key has a small chip sealed inside the plastic head. When you turn the key, the immobilizer ring around the ignition cylinder sends a signal to that chip, the chip responds with a code, and the system decides whether to allow the engine to run. No valid response, no start.

On the 2000 XK, that same key head also carries a remote for locking and unlocking. So you've got the transponder chip handling the immobilizer side and a separate remote circuit handling the door locks. They share a housing but operate independently.

What this means practically: programming one side doesn't automatically fix the other. A key that opens the doors might still fail to start the car, and vice versa. When I cut and program a replacement for this vehicle, I verify both functions before I call the job done.

Question 3

My Jaguar won't recognize the key. Where do I even start?

Start with the ignition cylinder itself. On a 2000 XK, if you get a start-and-stall or a key warning on the dash, the immobilizer didn't complete its handshake with the chip. Could be a weakening chip, a key that lost synchronization, or an ignition ring that's picking up interference.

Try this first: hold the key steady in the start position for a full five seconds rather than turning quickly. Sometimes a marginal chip needs more time to respond.

If it still won't cooperate, don't keep cranking. Repeated failed attempts can complicate things on the security side. Call me, I'll bring diagnostic equipment and figure out whether this is a key issue or a vehicle-side issue before anything gets cut or programmed.

Can I get a replacement key made if I only have one left and I'm afraid to lose it?

This is exactly when you want to act, not after you've lost the last one.

On a 2000 XK, adding a spare while you still have a working key is a much simpler job than an all-keys-lost situation. I can cut a new blade to your vehicle and enroll the new transponder alongside your existing key. Both keys work, both are in the system.

All-keys-lost on this generation is still doable, but it takes more time and more steps because there's nothing working to reference against. Having a spare made now costs less in time and money than starting from zero later.

The remote on my key stopped working but the car still starts fine. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. On the 2000 XK, the remote and the transponder chip are independent. If the car starts normally, the chip side is healthy.

The remote signal can lose sync with the vehicle's receiver over time, or the internal contacts on a 20-plus-year-old key can just wear out. Before assuming you need a full replacement, I can check whether it's a synchronization issue that can be resolved, or whether the remote circuit inside the housing has actually failed.

If it's a sync issue, that's a quick fix. If the remote circuitry is dead but the chip is fine, we talk about options. Either way, you're not automatically looking at starting from scratch.
