I got a call on a Saturday evening from a number with an out-of-state area code. The guy was in Del Mar, up in Carmel Valley, at a spa resort for a partner retreat with his firm. The 2009 XK uses a proximity smart key system. No physical ignition cylinder to fall back on. The vehicle security system has to wirelessly read an enrolled fob before it will authorize a start. All-keys-lost on this generation means reading the vehicle security module, extracting the relevant security data, and writing a new fob that the module will accept. I worked through the OBD port in the valet lane with the resort lights overhead while he stood nearby watching. He had stopped looking at his phone by the time I was halfway through. People get quiet when they realize the car is actually going to start again.
It did start. Right there in the lane.
He had a programmed, tested fob in his hand and a flight he could still make. The dealer route would have stranded him through the week and cost him considerably more. He mentioned that part almost as an afterthought. The thing he actually cared about was getting home.
