1996 Subaru Outback
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How do I know you are not a scam locksmith?

Scam locksmiths are a real problem, and older vehicles are not immune. The pattern is always the same: a low quote on the phone, a price that doubles once they're standing at your car. EZ Car Keyz has over 100,000 followers across YouTube and TikTok where you can watch us do this kind of work before you ever call.

Q: Will the replacement key work exactly like the original?

For a 1996 Outback, the replacement is a metal key cut to your vehicle. We test it in the ignition, we test it in the doors, and the engine has to stay running before we call the job done. If the key turns but the car starts and immediately stalls, that tells us there's an anti-theft element involved, and we diagnose that on site rather than handing you a key that only half works.

Q: I lost both keys to my 1996 Outback and have nothing to copy from. Can you still make a key?

Yes. All-keys-lost on this generation doesn't require the original. We can decode the lock directly, which means reading the cuts off your door lock or ignition cylinder, then cutting a working key from that information. It takes a bit longer than duplicating an original, but it's a fully on-site job. No towing required. We come to you in Old Poway or wherever the car is sitting.

Q: My 1996 Outback key turns in the ignition but the engine starts and stalls right away. Is that a key problem?

That specific symptom, starts and immediately stalls, points toward the vehicle security system rather than the key cut itself. The key blade could be perfectly correct and you'd still see this if there's an anti-theft fault. It's not something to diagnose over the phone. I check it on site. Sometimes it's a straightforward fix; sometimes it points to a module or wiring issue that needs further attention.

1996 Subaru Outback Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

She was parked at the Vons near Old Poway Park when it happened. The key snapped. Not bent, not worn down to nothing, just snapped clean at the shoulder, half of it still in her hand and the other half sitting in the ignition cylinder of her 1996 Subaru Outback.

That's a different kind of locked out. The door was already open. The car wasn't going anywhere.

She found me, I was already working in Poway that afternoon, and I got to her in under 25 minutes. Extracted the broken piece from the cylinder without damaging it, then decoded the lock to get the key cuts. Cut a fresh replacement key on site, tested it in the ignition and both doors, and let her verify the engine stayed running.

She mentioned the dealer almost as an aside. She'd called them first out of habit, and they told her to have it towed in. I was already packing up my kit when she said that.

The groceries were fine this time.
