I got a call from a guy parked near RB Town Center, right off Bernardo Center Drive. He was on a road trip, had stopped to grab food, and came back to find the key blade snapped inside the ignition. Clean break, right at the shoulder.
He had already called another locksmith who told him the cylinder was done and needed to be drilled out. New cylinder, new key, the whole thing. He was looking at a painful bill and a car that would look like it had been attacked.

I pulled up with my extraction tools and worked the broken fragment out without touching the wafer surfaces. No drilling, no damage to the cylinder. Once the fragment was clear, I decoded the lock by reading each wafer position directly, which gave me the exact cut depths for a new blade.
The 2018 Outback uses a smart key fob paired with the vehicle through the diagnostic port. So after I cut the replacement blade from the decode, I ran the fob programming through OBD to register it to the immobilizer. The whole thing took about an hour on site.
His cylinder looked exactly the way it did before I got there. The other locksmith's plan would have left him with a replaced cylinder and a significantly larger bill. Destructive entry is a last resort, not a first move.
