🔧 PRO TIP
The 2009 Outback remote head key is a flip-style fob with the blade folded into the body. Four buttons, CR2032 battery. The transponder chip is built into the head of the key, so the fob and the ignition key are the same unit. You cannot split them up. If the fob shell cracks or the flip blade wears out, you need to transfer the chip correctly or reprogram from scratch, not just swap shells. The battery compartment is on the back of the fob. If you are getting inconsistent remote range but the key still starts the car fine, battery is the first suspect. But if the key cranks and then the engine stalls out almost immediately, that is the immobilizer talking, not a dead CR2032.

2009 Subaru Outback Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Over near the CSUSM area in San Marcos, a guy called me about his 2009 Outback. He had one key. The flip blade was starting to feel loose at the pivot, and the remote had been getting flaky for weeks. He kept dismissing it. Then one morning it just stopped unlocking the doors remotely. The blade still worked in the door, the car still started, but he knew he was one bad day away from a bigger problem.

He found me online and asked if I could just fix the range issue before it got worse. I told him that on these older flip-style remote head keys, "flaky remote" sometimes means the battery contact inside has worn down or the board has shifted in the housing. Sometimes it is just the CR2032 sitting loose.

I met him in a parking lot near campus. Opened the fob, found the battery contact had a slight bend from a previous battery swap where someone pried it wrong. Cleaned the contacts, reseated everything properly with a fresh CR2032. Remote range came right back.

Then he asked the smart question: what happens if I lose this key entirely. I walked him through what all-keys-lost actually looks like on a 2009 Outback. The immobilizer on these third-generation models needs to be accessed with diagnostic equipment to wipe and re-register keys. It is not an ignition-turn dance. He decided to get a spare cut and programmed right there while I had everything out.

He paid a fraction of what the dealer would have asked. More importantly, he left with two working keys instead of one borderline one.

“They responded instantly, showed up within an hour, and arrived exactly when they said they would. Made a copy and programmed a fob for my 2014 car with a worn ignition in about 15 minutes. The new key works perfectly and feels like a dealer key.”

Subaru Outback Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 2009 Subaru Outback?
Call a mobile locksmith before you even think about the dealer. All-keys-lost on a 2009 Outback requires diagnostic equipment to access the immobilizer, wipe the key memory, and register new keys. Dealer quotes for this job are rough. Forum threads show owners being quoted prices that made them question whether the car was worth keeping. A mobile locksmith comes to your location, brings the right equipment, and does the whole job on site. No towing. No waiting days for a service appointment. The immobilizer reset, key cutting, and programming all happen in your driveway or parking lot. The price you get on the phone is the price you pay.
Can you delete a lost or stolen key so it no longer starts my Outback?
My 2009 Outback uses a remote head key, not a push-button start fob. Is there still an emergency way into the car if the battery dies?
My 2009 Outback starts fine but stalls almost immediately after. Could this be a key or immobilizer problem?
I bought a replacement fob for my 2009 Outback online. Can I program it myself?
