Out in Shadowridge, I got a call from a guy who had already spent a week trying to sort out his 2004 Outback remote on his own. He had bought a replacement fob online, swapped in a new CR2025, and nothing worked. The car started fine every time, but the remote did nothing. He figured the fob was defective and bought a second one. Also nothing.

The 2004 Outback has an onboard remote registration sequence you can run from the driver seat without any diagnostic equipment, but it has to be done correctly and in one continuous attempt. He had tried to follow a forum post that had a step missing. The sequence never completed.
I walked him through the correct procedure on site, registered the fob he already had, and tested all four buttons plus range from across the driveway. Everything worked. He had two fobs he had paid for sitting in a drawer. We registered the second one too while we were at it.
He had been one step away from the dealer, who would have charged him a good chunk more and handed it back with a lot less explanation.
