🔧 PRO TIP
The 2003 Outback runs a separate remote entry module that talks to the body control side independently from the immobilizer. So here's the thing most people miss: if the remote stops working after a dead battery or a jump, the immobilizer can still be completely fine and the car will start just fine with the key in the ignition. The remote entry module sometimes loses its memory on a hard power loss. That means the fob needs to be re-paired to the module, not replaced. Before assuming the fob is dead, check the small fuses tied to the accessory and keyless entry circuits first. A blown fuse on that side kills the remote functions while the rest of the car acts totally normal. Also, the factory fob on this year takes a CR2025. A reading of 2.8 volts on that cell looks alive on a meter but is too weak to reliably trigger the receiver from more than a foot away.

2003 Subaru Outback Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy in Alpine Village flagged me down in a home improvement store parking lot. He had a 2003 Subaru Outback and a story about a key a different locksmith had made about eight days earlier.

It started fine in the morning. By the afternoon, it would crank and crank but not fire. No warning, no obvious pattern. He had already convinced himself there was a fuel pump going bad or some electrical gremlin deeper in the car. He had the car looked at by a shop. They found nothing wrong with the fuel or ignition hardware.

I asked him about the key first. He said another locksmith had cut and programmed a replacement a little over a week before the trouble started. That was enough for me.

A close-but-wrong transponder chip is one of the more frustrating failure modes in this work. It can pass the initial programming handshake, start the car a dozen times, and then begin dropping out as the immobilizer runs deeper verification cycles. That is exactly what was happening here. The chip in his key was not the right one for this generation of Subaru's immobilizer system. I confirmed it with my programmer, pulled the bad key out of the equation, and programmed a new key with the correct transponder chip. His original fob, the one with the factory FCC ID printed on the back, also had a CR2025 that was nearly depleted, which had been making the remote range worse on top of everything else.

Fresh chip, correct pairing, new battery in the fob. The car started on the first try and the remote locked and unlocked clean from across the lot.

He asked what the dealer would have charged. I told him a good chunk more than what he paid me, and that they would have needed the car towed in and probably a few days on the schedule. He had driven himself to that parking lot, and he drove himself home.

Subaru Outback Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 2003 Subaru Outback?
Call a mobile locksmith who actually works on Subaru systems before you call the dealer. All-keys-lost on the 2003 Outback means the immobilizer has to be reset and at least one new key has to be cut and programmed on site. Dealers can quote numbers that make your eyes water, and then they want the car towed in and scheduled. We come to you in Alpine Village, handle the whole job in your driveway or wherever the car is sitting, and the price you get on the phone is the price you pay. No tow bill, no surprise labor add-ons, no waiting three days for a parts order.
Can you erase lost or stolen keys from my Outback so they can't start the car anymore?
Does my 2003 Outback remote fob have a hidden emergency key blade inside?
My remote locks the car fine but won't unlock it. Is that the fob or something in the car?
I bought a replacement fob online for my 2003 Outback. Can I program it myself?
