1999 Subaru Outback
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Do I need to tow my 1999 Outback to the dealer if I have no keys?

No. On a vehicle this age, a dealer visit is the slow route, not the only route. I come to you in Downtown National City and cut a replacement key on site. No tow required.

Q: How long does a replacement key take on a 1999 Outback?

Usually under thirty minutes once I'm at the vehicle. The process is decoding or looking up the key code, cutting the blade, and testing it in the ignition and door lock. There's no programming countdown, no module work, no waiting period. It's a mechanical job from start to finish. Most of the time on site is the drive to you, not the actual key work.

Q: My 1999 Outback key turns in the ignition but the engine starts and then immediately stalls. Is the key wrong?

Not necessarily the key itself. A crank-then-immediate-stall on this generation points to an anti-theft component in the system, separate from whether the key blade is cut correctly. The key turning and the engine cranking means the mechanical cut is right. The stall after startup is what tells me something else is involved. That's a diagnosis I handle on site. I don't just hand you a cut key and drive away if the car isn't running.

Q: Can a locksmith cut a key for my 1999 Outback from the VIN, or does the lock have to be removed?

Both methods work and I carry the ability to do either. If the key code is traceable through the VIN, I look it up and cut to that code. If the code isn't available or I want to verify it, I decode the lock cylinder directly without removing it. On a 1999 Outback the lock cylinder is straightforward to decode with the right tools.

1999 Subaru Outback Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy at a brake shop near Downtown National City. He'd already been burned once on his 1999 Subaru Outback.

Called one of those $49 Google ad locksmiths, paid way more than that, and ended up with a key that didn't work right. He found me through Google Guaranteed and his first question was how to verify I was legitimate. That's a fair question, and honestly it's the right one to ask.

I gave him my BSIS license number on the phone. He pulled it up on the state website while we were still talking. That's exactly how it should go.

When I got to him, the actual problem was simpler than he expected. The 1999 Outback takes a standard metal key cut to the vehicle. No remote. No chip programming. No security module to reset. The previous locksmith had overcomplicated the job and underdelivered on it at the same time. I decoded his lock, cut a replacement key blade on site, and the car started clean on the first try.

He asked if I could have done this at his house. Absolutely. That's the whole point of being mobile.

Subaru Outback Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost all my keys to my 1999 Subaru Outback. Can you still make a new one?▼

Yes, and on a 1999 Outback it's actually one of the cleaner all-keys-lost jobs I do. This generation uses a standard metal key with no transponder chip to register and no security module to reset. I either pull the key code from the VIN through the manufacturer's records or decode the lock cylinder directly on site, then cut a replacement key blade to match. No tow, no waiting room, no dealer visit. The car starts like normal when I'm done.
