2007 Subaru Outback
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is a transponder key and how does it work on the 2007 Outback?

The key blade on your 2007 Outback has a small chip embedded near the base. When you turn the ignition, the immobilizer antenna ring around the cylinder reads that chip. If the code checks out, the system allows the engine to run. If it doesn't recognize the chip, or if no chip is detected at all, the car either won't start or will crank and immediately stall.

Q: My Subaru cranks and dies almost immediately. Could this be a key problem?

That exact symptom, cranks and stalls within a second or two, is one of the clearest signs of an immobilizer issue on this generation of Outback. The engine fires because the starter and fuel system work, then the vehicle security system cuts it off because it doesn't recognize the key as properly enrolled. A few things can cause this. The transponder chip in the key may be damaged. The immobilizer registration may have been done incorrectly or left incomplete.

Q: I bought a replacement transponder key online. Can I program it myself, or do I need a tech?

You need a tech for this one. The 2007 Outback does not have an owner-accessible onboard programming sequence for transponder keys the way some domestic vehicles from this era do. Enrolling a new key to the immobilizer requires professional diagnostic equipment connected through the OBD port. There's no ignition-turn sequence or button trick that accomplishes it. The key you bought online may be the correct blank, and that's fine. I can cut it and program it on site.

Q: Can you program a key when all keys are lost, or do I need a tow to the dealer?

All-keys-lost on the 2007 Outback is a job I handle on site. No tow required. I connect through the OBD port, clear the existing key data, and register new keys from scratch. The process takes longer than a simple add-a-key because the security system has a timed sequence that has to run fully before the new key data writes permanently. Skipping or interrupting that timer is exactly what produces the crank-and-stall symptom.

2007 Subaru Outback Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call near the Santee Lakes Area from a guy who was already frustrated before I even pulled up. He'd had another locksmith out to his 2007 Subaru Outback earlier that week. Paid for a new key. Car still wouldn't run.

He described it the same way every time it happens: cranks normally, fires up for a second or two, then cuts out. Not a dead battery. Not a bad starter. The engine actually runs briefly, which is the tell. That's the immobilizer doing its job and not recognizing the key as properly enrolled.

The previous locksmith had told him the module was bad. Left him with a bill and a car that still didn't start.

I verified the blade cut first, made sure we had the right key for the lock. Then I connected through the OBD port, cleared the failed key data that had been left behind from the botched attempt, and ran a clean immobilizer registration from scratch with the full security timer allowed to complete. The confirmation came up on my screen. Key permanently written.

He turned it over. Started and stayed running. He just sat there for a second before getting out.

The module was never bad. The procedure just hadn't been finished the first time.

Subaru Outback Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

My key shell is cracking and one of the buttons is about to fall out. Can you fix it without reprogramming the whole thing?▼

Usually, yes. The transponder chip lives inside the key, and as long as that chip is undamaged, I can transfer it into a new shell and cut a replacement blade to match. The programming stays intact because we're moving the original chip, not replacing it.
