Usually, yes. The transponder chip lives inside the key, and as long as that chip is undamaged, I can transfer it into a new shell and cut a replacement blade to match. The programming stays intact because we're moving the original chip, not replacing it. If the chip itself is cracked or the blade snapped off at the bow, that's a full replacement job, but the shell-swap alone is a much quicker fix and doesn't touch the immobilizer enrollment at all.

What exactly is a transponder key and how does it work on the 2007 Outback?

The key blade on your 2007 Outback has a small chip embedded near the base. When you turn the ignition, the immobilizer antenna ring around the cylinder reads that chip. If the code checks out, the system allows the engine to run. If it doesn't recognize the chip, or if no chip is detected at all, the car either won't start or will crank and immediately stall.

The 2007 Outback also uses a separate remote fob for lock and unlock functions. That remote rides on your keyring but is its own unit. It has nothing to do with starting the car. The transponder key and the remote fob are two distinct pieces, and they can fail independently of each other.

Before assuming the worst, try your second key if you have one. If the second key starts and holds, the first key is the problem and it's a straightforward replacement job. If both keys behave the same way, that points toward a vehicle-side diagnosis. Either way, this is something I can work through on site.

I bought a replacement transponder key online. Can I program it myself, or do I need a tech?

You need a tech for this one. The 2007 Outback does not have an owner-accessible onboard programming sequence for transponder keys the way some domestic vehicles from this era do. Enrolling a new key to the immobilizer requires professional diagnostic equipment connected through the OBD port. There's no ignition-turn sequence or button trick that accomplishes it.

The key you bought online may be the correct blank, and that's fine. I can cut it and program it on site. Just bring it along.

Can you program a key when all keys are lost, or do I need a tow to the dealer?

The process takes longer than a simple add-a-key because the security system has a timed sequence that has to run fully before the new key data writes permanently.
