Do you need to tow your 2008 BMW 5 Series to the dealer? For most BMWs from the mid-2000s through about 2018, no. I handle all-keys-lost right at the car.
A customer at home in Oxnard had his only fob stop working at 3am. His 5 Series was in the driveway with push-to-start and no key the car would recognize. He assumed he was calling a tow truck in the morning. I told him to stay put and that I'd come to him.
I connected my Smart Pro to the OBD port and read the CAS4 module data. His mechanical key, FCC ID , was a -button smart key that I programmed in his driveway in the middle of the night. He seemed pretty surprised the whole thing could happen at 3am on a residential street.
His total was about 95. The dealer would have been 200 plus a tow and a wait until business hours. There are some newer G-series BMWs where AKL requires extended bench work that takes longer and costs more, but those are still doable mobile. For most CAS-era and many F-series BMWs currently on the road, I do all-keys-lost on-site regularly. If your specific model needs dealer involvement, I'll tell you up front before any charges.
