Keys stuck in the ignition is one of the most common Cadillac calls I get, and dealers always push a full ignition replacement. The Z-keyway ignition on older CTS, SRX, DeVille, and Escalade models develops a sticking problem tied to the shifter interlock or worn wafers. The key goes in fine but won't come out. The dealer quotes a new cylinder, new keys, and a full reprogram at 200.

A golfer at the club near Ojai Post Office Tower had been dealing with a stuck key on his 2002 Cadillac Escalade for weeks. He'd have to jiggle the shifter, turn the wheel, and pull firmly to free the key each time he parked. He was about to book the dealer appointment when he called me for a second opinion.

I checked the cylinder and the interlock mechanism. The issue was a combination of worn wafers and a sluggish park interlock sensor. So I used my ACDP to back up the body control module data before touching anything mechanical, then decoded the lock, replaced the worn wafers, and cleaned the interlock. His remote, FCC ID , synced back up through OBD. I showed him the old wafers so he could see the wear.

His total was 95. The dealer's 200 included a full cylinder assembly he didn't need. The key comes out clean now.
