2014 Fiat 500
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I need to tow my car to the dealer?

Not if you call me first. A dealer will want the car in their bay, which means arranging a tow on top of whatever they charge for the key itself. That tow bill is real money before they have even looked at the car. I come to the vehicle, cut the key, program it through the OBD port, and test everything right there. No tow, no drop-off, no waiting for a callback.

Q: What do I need to prove I own the vehicle?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership, either your registration or your title. I verify the VIN from the dash or the door jamb sticker on site, which also confirms the correct key specification for your car. Same standard a dealer would apply, but it takes a few minutes instead of requiring a scheduled appointment.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can I just program it myself?

Not on the 2014 Fiat 500. There is no ignition-turn sequence or button combo that will enroll a new remote head key on this vehicle. Programming goes through the OBD port with diagnostic equipment. So if you already bought the fob, it is not wasted, you just still need a tech to do the enrollment.

Q: My key starts the car fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Start with the CR2032 battery. On these flip fobs, a low cell will kill the remote signal well before it affects the transponder, so the car starts but the locks stop responding. Swap the battery, make sure it is seated properly and the contacts are clean, and retest all three buttons. If the remote still does not respond after a fresh cell, the issue could be in the fob's internal circuitry or the vehicle's receiver.

2014 Fiat 500 Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A couple was staying at a rental cottage up in Upper Ojai for the weekend. Two days, no local contacts, and their only key to the 2014 Fiat 500 had gone completely dead. The blade still turned in the door cylinder manually, so they could get in, but the car would not start. The immobilizer was not seeing the key at all. Their host gave them the dealer's number.

The dealer told them earliest availability was the following afternoon. Tow the car in, wait for an appointment slot, and plan on a significant bill. They were supposed to leave the next morning.

They found me online and called that evening. I was at the cottage driveway within the hour.

I connected through the OBD port, pulled what I needed from the car's security system, and programmed a new remote head key on site. The flip blade got cut to match the vehicle, the transponder got enrolled, and I walked through every function. Locks, unlock, and the third button. Then I had them try the ignition themselves, because that is the moment that matters and it should happen in their hands, not mine.

They saved a good chunk compared to the dealer quote, skipped the tow entirely, and were packed and ready to leave on their original schedule. The dealer would have been fine. It just would have cost more and taken longer, and neither of those things needed to happen.
