2018 Fiat 500
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What is actually inside the 2018 Fiat 500 key, and why does it need programming?

The flip fob on this car is doing two jobs at once. The blade and its transponder chip handle the ignition side of things: the vehicle's immobilizer reads the chip every time you go to start the car. The remote portion handles locking and unlocking over radio frequency. Both sides have to be paired to your specific vehicle. The transponder enrollment in particular requires professional diagnostic equipment talking directly to the vehicle.

Q: What kind of equipment does EZ Car Keyz use on a job like this?

For cutting, I use computerized key machines that can work from decoded lock data or from the vehicle's key code. For programming the electronic side, I carry professional automotive diagnostic tools that communicate with the vehicle's immobilizer and security system directly through the OBD port. The full kit runs well into the thousands and takes real training to use correctly.

Q: My 2018 Fiat 500 fob range has gotten really short lately. Is the key dying?

Usually it's the battery before it's anything else. The CR2032 in these flip fobs can drop to a voltage that still powers the chip but doesn't give the remote transmitter enough to reach the car from more than a few feet. Swap the battery with a quality CR2032, seat it firmly, and retest range. If range comes back, you're done.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2018 Fiat 500. Can a new key still be made without any working key?

Yes. All-keys-lost is a standard job. It takes longer than adding a spare when you already have a working key, because the process involves clearing the existing key memory from the immobilizer and enrolling the new key fresh. I do this on site with my programming tools. You do not need to tow to a dealer. Plan for roughly 45 to 60 minutes on site for an all-keys-lost situation on this vehicle.

2018 Fiat 500 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A fleet maintenance worker at a tire warehouse lot in Ojai came out early one morning to find he'd snapped the key blade in the door cylinder of a company 2018 Fiat 500. Half the blade was lodged in the lock.

The other half was in his hand. He had other vehicles to get to and no time to sit on hold with a dealer for an appointment that probably wouldn't happen until the next day.

I drove out to Meiners Oaks, where he'd pulled the car off the main lot, and got to work. Extracted the broken fragment from the cylinder first, then decoded the lock from the barrel to get the cut data. Cut a fresh blade to match. The electronic side of the flip fob needed to be registered to the vehicle, so I ran that through my programming equipment on site.

He was moving again in under an hour from the time he called. No tow, no appointment, no waiting room.

He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a significant wait time just to get the car in, on top of whatever the job itself would have cost. I was already packed up and gone before their service department would have even opened.

For a snapped key, this one felt like a crisis at 6 in the morning. By 7 it was handled.

Fiat 500 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How many buttons does the 2018 Fiat 500 key fob have?▼

Four buttons. The fob is a flip style, meaning the blade folds into the remote body when not in use. When I finish a job on one of these, I run every button individually before I call it done. Not just a quick click-and-go. Each function gets confirmed working before I leave the lot.
