2017 Fiat 500
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long should a replacement key hold up?

Years, realistically. The programming itself does not degrade or expire. What fails over time is almost always physical: worn rubber button pads, a cracked shell from drops, or a battery that's finally given out. CR2032 cells in moderate-use fobs tend to last a couple of years before range starts dropping. When it does, swap the battery before assuming anything bigger is wrong.

Q: What if the new key stops working a few weeks after you program it?

Call us. Our work is covered under warranty. That said, if a freshly programmed key quits working in a short window, the cause is almost never the programming. A weak CR2032 is the first thing to check. If the battery is fine, the next question is whether the car's 12V battery is dropping voltage, which can make the immobilizer behave erratically. We troubleshoot the actual cause rather than just handing you another key.

Q: I have one working key for my 2017 Fiat 500. Should I get a spare made now or wait until I need it?

Make the spare now. All-keys-lost on this car is a more involved job than adding a second key while you still have a working one. When you have a functioning fob present, the process is faster and cleaner. Lose that last key and the job gets longer because the immobilizer has to be handled differently without a recognized key to work from. Waiting until you're stranded is the expensive version of this decision.

Q: My 2017 Fiat 500 fob suddenly has really short range. Is the system failing?

Short range almost always means a weak battery. Swap the CR2032 first. If range comes back, you're done. If it stays short after a fresh battery, the next thing to check is whether the fob took any impact recently. A drop can shift internal components just enough to affect the signal. That's fixable. If both of those check out and range is still poor, then it's worth having the fob tested on a programming tool to see how it's communicating.

2017 Fiat 500 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

It was July, mid-afternoon, and I got a call from a guy in the Matilija area of Ojai. He was at a pet store parking lot.

His dog was inside the 2017 Fiat 500, windows cracked but not cracked enough, and his key had failed him. Not a dead battery situation. The blade had actually snapped in the door lock. He was locked out, the interior was heating up fast, and the dealer told him two days.

I told him I was 15 minutes out and to call animal control immediately if the dog showed any signs of heat distress before I arrived. I wasn't going to make promises about what 15 minutes felt like in a hot car.

I got there, got the door open using non-destructive entry, and got the AC running. Once the dog was safe and the car was cooling down, I focused on the actual key job. The 4-button fob for this car uses a factory fob with the emergency blade integrated. I pulled up the immobilizer through the OBD port with my diagnostic equipment, read the security data, and programmed a fresh fob to the car. Tested every button, tested the start, handed it over.

The dog was fine. The whole thing from arrival to working key was under 25 minutes. The dealer wanted a two-day wait and a bill that was way more than what I charged. Some jobs are just about convenience. This one was not.

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys for the 2017 Fiat 500?▼

We use OEM-spec blanks that match the factory fob for this car, including the correct button count, battery type, and the integrated emergency blade. The immobilizer on the 2017 Fiat 500 is not particularly forgiving about key quality. Starting with a verified blank means we're not chasing compatibility problems after the fact.
