A community garden volunteer over on Thompson Boulevard in Ventura flagged me down on a Saturday. She had a story I hear too often. Another locksmith had already charged her full price for a 2017 Fiat 500X smart key that never programmed right. The car would crank, run for about two seconds, then the body control module would cut fuel injection. Classic failed immobilizer learn.
The other tech told her the BCM was bad and left.
The BCM was fine. The locksmith wasn't. Fiat's Delphi and Marelli BCMs require a PIN-based security handshake using the AES protocol. If you rush the sequence or pull the wrong security data, the module accepts the key temporarily but never commits it to permanent memory. The engine cranks to fool you, then the immobilizer kills it.
I used my SIP22 Lishi to verify the mechanical cut on her existing blade was correct. Then I connected through the OBD port with my IM608, read the correct immobilizer password off the BCM, cleared the failed key data the previous tech left behind, and ran a clean programming sequence from scratch. Her smart key, M3N-40821302, came back with all four buttons responding and a clean engine start with no fuel cutoff. I pulled up the confirmation screen and turned it toward her so she could see the key was fully learned.
She had already paid the first locksmith too, and I couldn't do anything about that. But I could make sure this one actually worked.
