There's a small art supply shop lot in Ventura, just off the main strip in North Ventura, and that's where I met the guy who wanted a straight answer about OEM versus aftermarket on his 2018 Fiat 500x.

Where aftermarket goes wrong is supplier quality. Thin plastic that snaps at the pivot hinge after a few months of keychain life. I've seen it. So I test every batch before it goes in the van. If a batch comes in feeling cheap or the button travel is off, it goes back. I'd rather eat a return than hand someone a key that fails in ninety days.

I pulled the new fob out on the hood of my service van and walked him through it before I even cut anything. Button feel, pivot action, the emergency insert blade, where the CR2032 sits. He held it, pressed the buttons, compared it to his worn original. His call.

He went with it. Saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer quoted him. And the key he's using as his daily driver now is the one I made that afternoon in the parking lot.
