Push-to-start all-keys-lost is the job that scares most Ford owners the most. No physical key slot, no way to "just turn the ignition." The car needs to wirelessly detect a fob that's programmed to its specific immobilizer before it will even wake up. If that fob is gone, the car feels bricked, but it isn't.
A camper at a campground outside Port Hueneme had a 1999 Ford Expedition with push-to-start and zero keys. He was an hour outside town with no cell service until he walked to the camp office. He'd been told by multiple people that smart key all-keys-lost was dealer-only.
I drove out to the campground. Push-to-start AKL is more involved than a standard transponder job because the car's body control module needs to be accessed and the old key data cleared before new fobs can learn. I used my ACDP to pull the immobilizer data as a safety backup, then ran the AKL sequence through the OBD port. His smart key, FCC ID CWTWB1U331, was a 4-button proximity fob.
His car started at a campground with no cell service and no dealer within an hour. Total was around 87. The dealer route would have been 189 plus a long-distance tow. Smart key AKL isn't dealer-only, it's tool-dependent. He was pretty amazed it could all happen at a campground in the middle of nowhere.
