I was over in Pierpont on a Thursday afternoon when a woman flagged me down in the parking area near the beach access. She had her 2016 Expedition sitting there, wouldn't start, and she was holding her fob out like that was going to help me diagnose it faster.
She'd already done the battery swap herself, which I respected. Fresh CR2032, seated right. Still getting a key-not-detected warning when she pressed the start button. She'd also tried the backup: holding the fob directly against the start button to use the passive reader inside it. That worked. The car fired up. She looked at me like I had something to do with it.
That told me what I needed to know. When the passive read-through on the start button works but the proximity range is dead or nearly dead, you're usually looking at one of the external antenna loops losing signal, not a fob defect and not a programming issue. The fob itself was talking fine at close range.
I did a full function check on site. Walk the exterior, test each door handle zone, run through all five buttons, confirm range front and back. One of the rear door handle zones was flaky, probably a connector issue on that antenna rather than anything to do with the key. The fob was fine. The car was drivable and starting correctly using normal proximity from the driver's seat.
She'd already been told by someone else to take it to the dealer for reprogramming. That would have been a wasted trip and a wait they measured in days, not hours. Knowing the difference between a fob problem and a vehicle-side antenna problem saved her that whole detour.
