2022 Ford Expedition
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a smart key and how is it different from a regular car key?

Your 2022 Expedition uses a smart key system, which means the fob communicates with the vehicle wirelessly. The vehicle's immobilizer verifies the fob's credentials before it allows the engine to start. It also handles remote lock and unlock through its five buttons. What makes it different from an older key is that cutting the blade alone does nothing -- a replacement fob has to be electronically enrolled to your specific vehicle before it will function.

Q: What equipment do you actually use to program a 2022 Ford Expedition key?

On a 2022 Expedition, the programming goes through Ford's own diagnostic platform. I use professional-grade immobilizer software that has current Ford coverage -- the kind that handles the full enrollment process including all-keys-lost scenarios. Newer Ford vehicles like this one do require a higher level of software access than something from 2015 would, and not every tool on the market has kept up with that.

Q: I have one working key for my 2022 Expedition. Can I add a second fob as a spare without losing the first one?

Yes, and you should. Adding a spare while you still have a working key is faster and simpler than dealing with an all-keys-lost situation later. The process keeps your existing fob active and enrolls the new one alongside it. The vehicle can store multiple fobs. All-keys-lost on this generation requires additional steps and takes longer because the system has to be reset before any new key can be recognized -- it's not complicated, but it does add time.

Q: My 2022 Expedition door handle isn't detecting my fob when I reach for it, but the start button works fine. What's going on?

If the start button sees the fob but the door handle passive detection isn't triggering, the fob itself is almost certainly not the problem. The passive unlock uses antennas in the door handles that are separate from the interior antennas the start button relies on. A handle sensor, its wiring, or that door's antenna is the more likely culprit -- especially if it's isolated to one door while others work normally.

2022 Ford Expedition Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy in Waverly Heights, Thousand Oaks, on a Tuesday morning. He'd gone out to his 2022 Expedition to run his kids to school and the push-button start just sat there. No crank, no dash activity on that front. The fob felt unresponsive in his hand and he wasn't sure if he had a dead key or something deeper going on.

He'd already tried holding the fob close to the start button, which is actually the right instinct on these when the battery is too weak to trigger passive detection. Didn't help.

I pulled up to his driveway about 30 minutes after he called. First thing I did was pop the fob open and check the CR2450. The cell he had in there was the right type but it was reading low on my tester -- not dead flat, just weak enough that the vehicle security system wasn't getting a reliable signal. Swapped it for a fresh one, reassembled, and held it to the start button again.

Still nothing.

That told me the battery wasn't the whole story. Connected through the OBD port, pulled up the module data, and found the fob wasn't enrolled -- which can happen when a fob is replaced without being properly paired, or in rare cases after a module update. Ran the programming sequence. The vehicle recognized the key on the first try.

He started it himself, backed out of the driveway, pulled back in. Wanted to make sure it wasn't a fluke. It wasn't.

The whole job from first wrench to engine running was under 40 minutes. He mentioned he'd called the dealer the night before and they'd told him to tow it in and leave it. He didn't say what they quoted him and I didn't ask. He just said he was glad he didn't have to do all that.

Ford Expedition Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How do I spot a fake locksmith before I get ripped off?▼

Three things. First, look up the business name on Google and Yelp and check that the phone number and address are consistent across listings. Scam operations often use a call-center number that doesn't match any real business address. Second, ask for a firm price on the phone before anyone rolls out. A legitimate locksmith will ask for your year, make, and model and give you a real out-the-door number.
