I was out in Poinsettia on a Tuesday afternoon for a woman who had already tried two things before she called me: a new CR2032 from the drugstore and a YouTube video that told her to hold the lock and unlock buttons simultaneously. Neither one did anything.
She was standing next to her 2015 Expedition in the parking lot of her office building. The fob would not lock the doors, the passive handle detection was completely dead, and the dash was showing a key-not-detected warning every time she approached. She had a working key from her husband's set, so the car would start, but her own fob was done.
I pulled the fob apart on my tailgate and looked at the battery first. The CR2032 she had installed was the right type, but the positive contact clip had a slight inward bend, probably from the previous battery being pried out instead of lifted. The cell was sitting on it at an angle and making intermittent contact at best. I straightened the clip, reseated the battery correctly, and snapped the fob back together.
No response. Which told me the fob itself had given up and was not transmitting. So we moved to programming. I connected to the OBD port under the dash, ran the key registration sequence, enrolled her fob, and walked every function: passive handle unlock on both front doors, the lock button, the unlock button, and the remaining buttons one at a time. Everything came back clean. Total time in the lot was under 35 minutes.
She mentioned she had called the Ford dealer before reaching me. They told her the fob would need to be ordered, that she would need to schedule a service appointment, and that she should plan on leaving the vehicle. I was already packing up my bag by the time she finished that sentence.
