2007 Ford Expedition
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I need to tow my Expedition to the dealer for a replacement key?

Not if you call us. Dealers will tell you to tow it in because they're not coming to you. On top of whatever they charge for the key itself, you're adding a tow, waiting for an appointment slot, and arranging a way to get yourself home in the meantime. We come to the vehicle. The programming runs through the OBD port, so the car doesn't need to move. All-keys-lost situations are handled the same way, on site, without the tow.

Q: What do I need to show to prove I own the Expedition?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership, either your registration or your title. I verify the VIN from the dashboard plate or the door jamb sticker to confirm the vehicle matches before I do anything. That's standard practice whether you go through a locksmith or a dealer. Dealers typically require the same documents but sometimes add steps. If a key was reported stolen, some have asked for a police report before starting the job.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself or do I need a tech?

The 2007 Expedition does have an onboard programming sequence for the remote portion, but there's a catch: it only works if you already have a working programmed key to start the process. You cycle through the sequence using the existing key, and the car enters a mode where it accepts new remotes. If you have one working key and just need to add a second fob, that self-programming route is worth trying.

Q: My Expedition starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working after I replaced the battery. What did I miss?

Usually the battery contacts. The CR2032 tray in the remote head key on these is easy to reinstall slightly off, and a contact that isn't making full connection will read as a dead fob even with a fresh battery. Open the housing back up, check that the battery is seated flat, and press the contacts down gently to make sure they're snug against both faces of the cell.

2007 Ford Expedition Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from someone staying at a hotel out in Via Marina in Oxnard. She was midway through a trip, driving a 2007 Expedition, and her only key had just stopped working. Not partially working. Stopped.

The car wouldn't start. The remote buttons did nothing. She'd already called the dealer and they told her to tow it in, with the earliest appointment being the following afternoon. She didn't know anyone locally and was looking at a tow bill on top of the dealer's quote just to sit another day without a car.

I drove out that evening. Found her in the hotel lot, key in hand, looking at the Expedition like it had personally wronged her.

First thing I did was check the basics. The CR2032 was so dead my tester barely registered it. Swapped it, tested the remote. Buttons came back. But the car still wouldn't start, which meant the remote battery wasn't the whole story. The transponder needed to be re-enrolled. I connected through the OBD port, ran the key through the programming sequence, and confirmed it took. Turned the key, engine came up clean.

The whole stop was under 30 minutes. She was back on her trip that same night, skipped the tow, skipped the wait, and paid a fraction of what the dealer had quoted.

I didn't say much after it started. The dashboard said everything.

I'm locked out with no spare key. Can you come to me in Via Marina?▼

Yes. Call us and we come to you, wherever the Expedition is sitting in Via Marina or anywhere else in Oxnard. No tow, no waiting room, no appointment. I carry the key blanks and programming tools for the 2007 Expedition in the van, so the cut and enrollment happen right there on site. If you're locked out, we can get the door open and then cut and program a working replacement key in the same visit.
