Got a call from a woman staying near Oxnard Beach Park. She was in from out of town, parked at her hotel, and her only key to a 2007 Expedition had just stopped working. Remote buttons dead, and when she turned the ignition, the engine cranked for a second and shut right off. Theft light on the dash flashing steady.
She had already called the Ford dealer. They told her to have it towed in. Earliest opening was the next afternoon, and the tow alone would have been its own headache on top of the key cost.
I drove out that evening. Plugged into the OBD-II port under the dash and read the PATS status off the instrument cluster module, which on the 2007 Expedition is where the transponder authentication lives. The PCM and the ICM talk to each other, and her existing key's 4D-63 chip had just stopped being recognized. Could have been a weak chip, could have been a hairline crack in the glass transponder tube inside the key head.
I cut a new H84-PT blade on my machine in the van, matched to her door lock decode, then programmed the fresh TI 4D-63 transponder through OBD. Whole job, about 25 minutes. Engine fired on the first turn, theft light went solid and then off, which is exactly what you want to see.
She sat in the driver's seat for a second after it started, like she was waiting for it to stall again. It did not. She was back on the road that same night for a fraction of what the dealer quoted.
