2005 Ford Expedition
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a remote head key and how is it different from a regular key?

A remote head key combines the fob and the ignition key into one unit. The key blade comes out of the fob body and turns in the cylinder. Inside that fob body is a transponder chip that the immobilizer reads every time you turn the key. If the chip is not recognized, the engine cranks and dies. There are also buttons on the body for remote lock and unlock functions. The 2005 Expedition uses this setup.

Q: How does a mobile locksmith compare to the dealer for this job?

The dealer experience for a 2005 Expedition key usually goes like this: you call, they tell you the part has to be ordered, you wait a day or two, you pay separately for the key hardware, the cutting, and the programming time. If you have no working key, add a tow to that list.

Q: I have one working key left. Can I get a spare made without losing my current key?

Yes, and this is actually the better situation to be in. On the 2005 Expedition, having one working key in the system means I can add a second key alongside it without wiping anything. The process is faster and simpler than all-keys-lost. Your existing key keeps working, and you leave with two programmed keys instead of one. All-keys-lost, where there are no working keys at all, requires clearing the stored key data entirely and re-enrolling from scratch.

Q: My 2005 Expedition starts fine but the remote lock and unlock stopped working. Does the whole key need to be replaced?

Not necessarily. On a remote head key, the transponder side and the remote side are related but they can fail independently. First thing to check is the CR2032 battery inside the fob. A dead or weak battery kills the remote functions while the transponder still works off the ignition circuit, so the car starts but the buttons do nothing. Pop the fob open, swap the CR2032, and retest. If the range comes back, you are done.

2005 Ford Expedition Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy over in Wagon Wheel, Oxnard called me on a Tuesday evening. His 2005 Expedition had been sitting in the driveway since that morning. He had one key, and the transponder had stopped communicating. The engine would crank but not catch, which is exactly what this generation does when the immobilizer rejects the key signal. He thought the car had a bigger problem.

I showed up with my programmer and we started at the OBD port. The remote head key itself was worn down, the rubber buttons cracked, the fob body separating at the seam. It had been through a lot. I cut and programmed a new unit to the car, verified the immobilizer was reading it clean, and walked through the lock, unlock, and remaining button functions to confirm the remote side was live too.

He asked what the dealer would have told him. Honestly, probably a tow and a two-day wait for parts. He had his car back the same night, in his own driveway, for a fraction of that.

Ford Expedition Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Why is Ford key replacement so expensive?▼

A few things stack up. The remote head key on a 2005 Expedition is not just a cut piece of metal. It has a transponder chip that has to be registered to the immobilizer before the engine will run, and remote functions that also need to be programmed separately.
