A mobile locksmith who works Fords regularly carries the fob already, comes to your location, and does not have a service bay overhead to recover. That is where the gap comes from.

Not necessarily. On a remote head key, the transponder side and the remote side are related but they can fail independently. First thing to check is the CR2032 battery inside the fob. A dead or weak battery kills the remote functions while the transponder still works off the ignition circuit, so the car starts but the buttons do nothing.

Pop the fob open, swap the CR2032, and retest. If the range comes back, you are done. If the buttons still do not respond after a fresh battery with good contact, the fob electronics may have failed and a replacement unit would need to be cut and programmed to your car. That is a quick diagnosis I can do on site.
