1998 Ford Expedition Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Got a call from a guy over near Bolker Park in Port Hueneme. His 1998 Expedition wouldn't start. Theft light on the dash blinking fast, engine cranking but refusing to catch. He'd already replaced the battery in his CWTWB1U331 remote with a fresh CR2032, thinking that was the problem. It wasn't.
I explained that on these first-gen Expeditions, the remote and the immobilizer are two completely separate systems. The remote runs on 315 MHz RF to the GEM module (generic electronic module, Ford part number for the '98 is typically F75B-14B205-CB or similar depending on build date) and handles door locks and panic. The anti-theft lives in the transponder chip buried inside the key head. Different systems, different failures.
His key had a cracked housing. The 4C transponder chip inside had shifted just enough that the PATS antenna ring around the ignition cylinder wasn't reading it consistently. The theft indicator was doing the rapid flash, which on PATS I means "no valid key detected." Slow steady flash means the system is armed and normal. Fast flash means trouble.
I cut a new H72 transponder key, programmed it through the two-key procedure since he still had one working spare at home, and tested both. Theft light went to its normal slow blink. Engine fired right up.
He'd been calling around to dealers earlier that day. They quoted him a wait of several days just to get an appointment. I was in and out of his driveway in about 25 minutes.
