I got the call from a Wildwood neighborhood parking lot near one of the elementary schools. It was a Wednesday afternoon.

A woman had a 2020 Ford Expedition and her only fob had gone through the washing machine the night before. She had two kids with her, a schedule that didn't have any room in it, and a push-button start that wasn't responding. The dealer told her they could get her in on Friday. She called me instead.

I pulled into the lot, popped the OBD port cover, and connected my programming tool. The Expedition's security system has a built-in timing sequence before it accepts a new key, and that part you just wait through. It's not something to rush or shortcut. I've seen other guys try to rush it and end up starting the process over. I just let it run.

The new fob paired up clean. I walked her through every button, tested the door handles, and confirmed the start button was reading the fob from a normal distance inside the cabin. Then I told her to keep the washed fob in a dry spot for a few days just in case the board recovered, but not to depend on it.

She was out of that lot in under 90 minutes from when she called, both kids in the back, and made her next stop. The dealer quote would have been the end of her Wednesday and most of Thursday. Mine wasn't.
