2020 Ford Expedition
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How fast can you get to me in Wildwood, Thousand Oaks?

Wildwood is a regular stop for me. Typical arrival is within 30 minutes of your call, depending on where exactly you're parked and what traffic looks like on the 101. When you call, I confirm the year, model, and key type so I show up with the right blank and the right tools already loaded. No second trip, no "we have to order the part."

Q: Can I get a replacement key made today?

Yes. I carry the blanks and programming equipment for the 2020 Expedition on every run. There's no waiting on a part to ship, no booking an appointment for next week, and no two-visit process. Ford owners who go the dealer route regularly report being told the blank has to be ordered first, or being scheduled out several weeks. Some people have waited over a month for a second key that kept getting delayed. I treat every call as same-day.

Q: My 2020 Expedition shows a key-not-detected warning but the fob battery is fine. What's going on?

This is one of the more common complaints on the Expedition forums and it usually points to one of three things. First, check whether the fob is registering at all by holding it directly against the start button and trying to start the car. If the car starts that way, the fob is alive but the signal range has degraded, which can happen from a cracked internal antenna, a slightly deformed battery contact, or RF interference in the area.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2020 Expedition. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2020 Expedition smart key system does not have a self-programming sequence you can run from the driver's seat. There's no ignition-cycling trick or button sequence that works here. Registering a new fob requires a diagnostic tool connected to the OBD port. If you bought a blank online, it's still a valid blank, you just need someone with the right equipment to pair it. I can do that on-site in Wildwood.

2020 Ford Expedition Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got the call from a Wildwood neighborhood parking lot near one of the elementary schools. It was a Wednesday afternoon.

A woman had a 2020 Ford Expedition and her only fob had gone through the washing machine the night before. She had two kids with her, a schedule that didn't have any room in it, and a push-button start that wasn't responding. The dealer told her they could get her in on Friday. She called me instead.

I pulled into the lot, popped the OBD port cover, and connected my programming tool. The Expedition's security system has a built-in timing sequence before it accepts a new key, and that part you just wait through. It's not something to rush or shortcut. I've seen other guys try to rush it and end up starting the process over. I just let it run.

The new fob paired up clean. I walked her through every button, tested the door handles, and confirmed the start button was reading the fob from a normal distance inside the cabin. Then I told her to keep the washed fob in a dry spot for a few days just in case the board recovered, but not to depend on it.

She was out of that lot in under 90 minutes from when she called, both kids in the back, and made her next stop. The dealer quote would have been the end of her Wednesday and most of Thursday. Mine wasn't.

How long does a 2020 Ford Expedition smart key replacement take?▼

There's a built-in security delay in the programming process on these Fords, and that's not something any locksmith or dealer can skip. It's a fixed wait built into the system. If you have at least one working fob and just want to add a spare, total on-site time usually runs 20 to 35 minutes once you include that wait. All-keys-lost is a longer job because the system needs to be fully reset before new fobs can be registered.
