Got a call from a woman over in Olivas Adobe in Ventura. She was standing next to her 2014 Expedition in the driveway, one key to her name, and it had just snapped at the blade. Clean break, right where the H92 blank meets the remote head shell.
She already had the dealer's answer. Tow it in, wait for an appointment, probably two days out. She had her kid's travel baseball tournament the next morning in Camarillo. That was the whole reason this mattered right now.
I pulled up inside an hour. The broken blade was still in the ignition cylinder. Extracted it with a hook pick, no drama. The transponder chip inside the old remote head was still good, but the housing was cracked from the stress of the break, so a full replacement made more sense than trying to transplant components.
New 164-R8000 blank, cut on the HPC 1200 in the van using the broken pieces to decode the cuts. Then connected to the OBD-II port and programmed the 80-bit PATS transponder through the instrument cluster module. Her truck's ICM board, part number DL1T-14B476-BJ, accepted the new key on the first write. Tested ignition, tested all five remote buttons, tested the manual blade in the driver door lock.
She picked up both halves of the old broken key off my tray and dropped them in her purse. "Evidence," she said. Whole thing took maybe 25 minutes.
