2018 Ford Expedition
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long does the programming actually take once you're at my car?

Plan for 30 to 45 minutes. The vehicle's security system has a timed delay built into the key registration process, and that countdown is not something anyone can skip, dealer or locksmith. After the delay clears, the actual fob pairing goes fast. All-keys-lost jobs can involve one or two of those waits stacked together, so those run a little longer. Either way, I'm standing next to your car the whole time, not routing it through a shop queue.

Q: Can you get a key done faster than the dealer?

Almost always, yes. The actual technical work on an Expedition smart key is 30 to 60 minutes regardless of who does it. The difference is everything around that work. Dealers schedule around shop load, parts availability, and bay time. I carry Expedition fob blanks and come to you the same day you call. There's no drop-off, no waiting room, no picking the car back up later.

Q: I bought a fob online to save money. Can you just program it, or is there a catch?

Bring it and I'll check it. The main thing to verify is that the fob is the correct one for the 2018 Expedition, not a lookalike from a different model year or a related vehicle with a different configuration. The factory FCC ID on the fob needs to match what your vehicle expects. If it does, I can program it. If it doesn't, it won't pair no matter what equipment is used, and we'd need the right blank.

Q: My Expedition starts fine but the door handle touch sensors are hit or miss. Is that a key problem?

Not necessarily. If the vehicle starts and the fob communicates with the car, the key itself is doing its job. Inconsistent touch unlock is usually one of three things: a battery that's on its way out but not fully dead yet, a dirty or slightly corroded handle sensor area, or a door-side issue that has nothing to do with the fob at all.

2018 Ford Expedition Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A woman in North Ventura had been driving with one key for about four months. The second fob had died sometime around the holidays and she just never dealt with it. Then the working one started glitching, and she finally called.

She met me in the parking lot near the mall during her lunch break. The original fob was reading intermittently, which usually means a battery or contact issue, but in her case the contact clip had a slight bend to it, probably from someone prying the case wrong at some point. I seated a fresh CR2450 correctly, straightened the clip, and the original fob came back clean.

The second key was a full programming job. I pulled the fob she'd bought online months ago, still in the packaging, and went to work through the OBD port. Her vehicle's security system needed to learn the new fob before it would do anything, so I ran the registration sequence, waited out the built-in security delay, and confirmed the handshake completed.

Then I walked the whole thing: lock, unlock, touch sensors on both front handles, the other buttons. All of it. She had two working keys before she finished her lunch.

She mentioned the dealer had quoted her for the whole job and told her to drop the car off in the morning. I did it in the same parking spot, same day she called.

Ford Expedition Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a key after hours or on the weekend?▼

Call me. Ford dealers typically run limited Saturday hours and are closed Sunday. If you lose your only key on a Friday evening, you're looking at Monday at the earliest, and that's assuming the dealer has the right fob blank in stock and can fit you in. Expedition owners on forums have reported waiting a week or more for a spare key appointment at busy dealerships.
