Lost Canyons Golf Club member called about his 2021 GV80. Said the smart key worked fine yesterday, now nothing. Not the battery.
I met him in the club parking lot. He'd already tried two fresh CR2032s, cleaned the contacts, even YouTube'd a reset procedure that didn't exist. The fob looked perfect. No cracks, no water damage. But the car gave him "Smart key not detected" every time.
I plugged in and pulled codes. B2799: Smart Key antenna 3 malfunction. That's the one in the center console. Checked the fob first with my frequency counter: strong 433.92 MHz signal, good modulation. The problem was in the car, not the key.
Popped the console trim and found the issue. The antenna connector had backed out maybe 2mm. Just enough to break contact. Previous tech work, maybe. Clicked it back in, cleared the code, and his TQ8-FOB-4F35 worked like new.
He asked about getting a spare while I was there. Cut him a fresh emergency blade, cloned his working fob to a new shell. Both fobs tested perfect. Took 35 minutes total.
The dealer would've kept his car for days chasing that antenna. We fixed it in his own parking spot for a fraction of their diagnostic fee alone.
