Honda's immobilizer system is the reason your key costs more than a house key. Every Honda key since the early 2000s has a transponder chip embedded in the head or fob. When you press the start button, the car sends a radio signal to that chip. If the chip answers with the right code, the engine runs. If not, the immobilizer kills fuel injection within seconds. That's why you can't just copy a Honda key at the hardware store.

A retired postal worker near Oakbrook Regional Park thought only the dealer could program that chip. He had a 2004 Honda Accord and needed a spare. The dealer quoted 395 and he assumed that was his only option because of the "computer stuff" involved. His neighbor had used me before and passed along my number.
